Refund for Tzedaka? Chof Hei Kislev 5772

The following episode occurred many years ago in a Jewish community in Eastern Europe: The local ruler levied an enormous amount of money upon the Jewish community and informed them that if they failed to pay the entire amount, he would wipe out the entire Jewish population, men, women and children, r"l. The Jews were terribly frightened. They sent a representative to a famous tzaddik to ask him to daven for them that they be saved from their terrible predicament.

The tzaddik requested that every member of the community send money for tzedakah as a pidyon nefesh to be distributed to widows and orphans. They heeded the tzaddik's request and gathered the money for tzedakah from the entire community. They entrusted the money with an emissary who traveled to the tzaddik to give him the money. Then, just after the tzedakah emissary left, a representative of the ruler appeared with a letter in hand, stating that the decree was annulled!

Are the Greeks Behind Your Glasses? Chof Hei Kislev 5772

Although dreidels are no longer needed to mask the act of Torah study from the eyes of Greek soldiers, their historical use bears a similar message to contemporary Yidden. The challenges of making Torah study central to one's life are still applicable, albeit their origin has now shifted from an outside source to one's personal self.

See how each of the letters featured on the driedel can be seen as a window into improving one's consistency and efficiency in the realm of studying Torah by clicking here.

"Happy is he who arrives here with his knowledge in hand"
Lamed Tishrei 5772

For whatever the Neshama can comprehend and perceive in the knowledge of Torah, consummates its perfection. It cannot reach consummate perfection in the "Bond of Life - Hashem" in the Source from which it was hewn, without this knowledge. Therefore our Chachamim declared "happy is he who arrives here (to Gan Eden in the spiritual realms) with his knowledge in hand" so that he will not have to reincarnate and (descend) again to this (material) world.

As a bochur I learned in Montreal where Reb Volf was my Mashpiah. When I got married and started to work he called me every so often for donations for the yeshiva. Unlike other fundraisers who attempted to be soft, he was quite to the point, and he was relentless in his desire that I be shomer itim of limmud haTorah. Whenever we spoke
